NFP November 2026: The Gold Playbook
Friday’s NFP lands with a December Fed hike mostly priced in. Consensus is +65K jobs and 4.2% unemployment. See what every payrolls and jobless print means for gold with MRKT’s playbook.

NFP preview: what the market is pricing

The October jobs report drops Friday, November 6 at 8:30 AM ET. Consensus is +65K payrolls and a 4.2% unemployment rate.

The Fed watches this report so closely because its mandate has two jobs: stable prices and maximum employment. Payrolls and the unemployment rate are the cleanest read on that second one.
Right now that weighs more than usual. Cuts have been off the table since June, and the Fed has stayed hawkish since, raising rates in September for the first time in three years. With inflation still above target, the job market is the main thing that can slow the next hike.

That makes Friday a test of the December hike. MRKT's Interest Rate Tracker prices it at 68%, so a strong report would mostly confirm what's already priced. A weak report is what could pull those odds down and give gold room to run.

The data going in

  • Initial jobless claims: 189K vs 196K expected, tied for the lowest since 1969.
  • ADP private payrolls: 86K vs 69K expected.
  • ISM employment: manufacturing at 52.4, services up to 51.4 from 50.1.

Put together, companies are still hiring and almost nobody is getting laid off. Claims tied with the lowest level since 1969 and ADP beating estimates both point to a payrolls print at or a bit above the 65K consensus, which would support the Fed's case for a hike.

The NFP and unemployment rate playbook for gold

Friday's report gives two numbers at the same time, and gold reacts to both. Payrolls show how many jobs were added. The unemployment rate shows how many people are still looking for work. Gold moves against the dollar, so a stronger job market is bearish for gold and a weaker one is bullish.

MRKT's payrolls ladder for XAUUSD:

  • 125K or more: very bearish gold
  • Around 95K: bearish gold
  • 65K: neutral
  • Around 50K: bullish gold
  • 35K or less: very bullish gold

Forecasts on the MRKT calendar run from 35K to 125K, and several banks sit at 50K, under consensus.

MRKT's unemployment rate ladder for XAUUSD, with consensus at 4.2%:

  • 4.4%: very bullish gold
  • 4.3%: bullish gold
  • 4.2%: neutral
  • 4.1%: bearish gold
  • 4.0%: very bearish gold

The unemployment range runs only from 4.0% to 4.4%, so a 0.1 miss counts as a full surprise.

When both numbers point the same way, the move is usually clean: 95K with 4.1% unemployment is bearish for gold, 50K with 4.3% is bullish. The scenarios below cover what happens when they disagree. Also keep an eye on average hourly earnings, expected up 0.2% to 0.3% on the month, and on revisions to August and September, which can move price as much as the October number.

Scenarios

Hot print, 95K or more with 4.1% unemployment: the December hike looks locked in. Gold tests $4,028 support then $3991.

In line, around 65K and 4.2%: little changes for the Fed, and gold goes back to trading oil and Hormuz headlines inside $4,070 to $4,141.

Cold print, 50K or less with 4.3%: a second weak report in a row cuts hike odds and the dollar drops. Gold pushes into $4,141 to $4,191, with $4,280 above.

Mixed print, where payrolls and unemployment disagree: expect a whipsaw in the first minutes. The unemployment rate usually decides the second move
